It's New Year's Eve. Last moments of a year that is full of surprises, setbacks, and hopes are passing by quickly...I have to say this year has been good for me. I learned a lot, but the biggest lesson so far is how to say goodbye to things and people that I love. It seems as if I should get used to that by now, but I still flinch every time a goodbye is bound to happen.
Things are always changing, so I made some changes to my life, too. I retrieved one of my long-lost hobbies: wandering around in the bookstore. I went to the bookstore all the time, but I was always in a hurry. I forgot the magic of being able to take the time to pick up a book, smell it, and flip through its pages. It sounds like a simple thing, doesn't it? It's so simple that I forgot it. My bad.
So, now, to read books, I go to the bookstore more often than I go to the library; the background noises and the voices of people talking at the bookstore somehow are better to my fancy than the quiet and solemn library.
There is another thing that is also changing: love. Throughout the year, love came and went in a vicious cycle that left me confused and speechless. I realized I was a hopelessly romantic person. I watch romantic comedy movies day in and day out; no other genres of movies seem to engage my interest that much. I'm fond of watching those meet-cute moments, those witty conversations, those unreal but adorable scenes that quench my heart. Everything is scripted to deliver a message, and everything inspired me. In real life, I strive for harmony, for patience, for a love that is willing and stable. I loved too much, cared too much, and I expected too much, which, as a result, lead to an abundance of disappointments.
Still, I haven't lost faith in the word "love" yet. Love is all around. And the best are yet to come.
"I feel it in my fingers
I feel it in my toes
Love is all around me
And so the feeling grows..."
....the best are yet to come.
Texas, 20 minutes till 2008.
Welcome 2008!

How to Decide Who to Marry: By Kids
Kids Contemplate Marriage.
How would you make your marriage work?
Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a truck.
Ricky, age 10
How can a stranger tell if two people are married?
You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids.
Derrick, age 8
What do you think your mom and dad have in common?
Both don’t want any more kids.
Lori, age 8
What do most people do on a date?
Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough.
Lynnette, age 8 (isn’t she a treasure?)
On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date.
Martin, age 10
What would you do on a first date that was turning sour?
I’d run home and play dead. The next day I would call all the newspapers and make sure they wrote about me in all the dead columns.
Craig, age 9
When is it okay to kiss someone?
When they’re rich. (girls, did you read that?)
Pam, age 7
The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn’t want to mess with that.
Curt, age 7
The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It’s the right thing to do.
Howard, age 8
What is the right age to get married?
Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then. (I have almost 3 years to go )
Camille, age 10
No age is good to get married at. You got to be a fool to get married.
Freddie, age 6 (very wise for his age)
Is it better to be single or married?
I don’t know which is better, but I’ll tell you one thing. I’m never going to have sex with my wife. I don’t want to be all grossed out.
Theodore, age 8
It’s better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them.
Anita, age 9 (bless you child)
How do you decide whom to marry?
You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming.
Alan, age 10
No person really decides before they grow up who they’re going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you’re stuck with.
Kristen, age 10

A Shabby Book
When I was 6 or 7, I remember a book titled "Vietnam, My Home Land" sitting on my dad's bookshelf. It was just a normal shabby paper-back book with worn-out covers and some dog-eared pages, nothing fancy. Nevertheless, my dad has had a lot of English books, and at the time, I barely knew what English was, so I came to form a notion that all those English books stacking up in the house were "strange", including that particular book. However, many times, when I passed by the bookshelf, I took a glance at that book. The word "Vietnam" on its title somehow caught my attention. Maybe for my little mind, when something had "Vietnam" on it, it was not considered "strange" anymore.
Time passed. A few years later, when I was in 6th grade, I finally took that book off the shelf and tried to read it with my limited English. As you can guess, the book talks about Vietnam, about the geography, the places, the people, etc. Flipping through the pages of that book, I found myself astonished at Vietnam's distinguished culture, its rich heritage, and its stunning landscapes. And I remember that was the first time that I actually had a strong and distinct feeling about where I came from, where I call "my home land" without fail.
Since then, a lot of things have changed, I have had more knowledge, I have done more things, but that feeling hasn't changed much. I know that there is a lot of things going on out there, that those debates about who's right and who's wrong will last forever, and that greediness will never go hand in hand with peace. But, whatever happens, I think John Kennedy said it best, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."
And it's not an easy question to answer.

The faith and courage to fly to new heights,
And the wisdom of the universe
to carry you there.
I received that as a prayer for me as I start my career.
Only Time?
I remembered when I was in 7th or 8th grade, I used to listen to this song, "Only Time" by Enya. Usually having nothing else more productive to do, I just sat there in my living room and listened to it over and over; I even tried to contemplate over what time really meant. Of course, I never could get to any conclusion, and I probably never will. But this song, it always triggers a tranquil feeling in me. Hidden thoughts, obscured disappointments, lame expectations, everything seems to be vanished into thin air. I just realize my speculation, after all, is my speculation. If I want to know the answer, I have to wait for it, wait for time. Be patient, and wait for time.
Who can say where the road goes, where the day flows?
Only time...
And who can say if your love grows, as your heart chose?
Only time...
Who can say why your heart sighs, as your love flies?
Only time...
Who can say when the roads meet, that love might be, in your heart?
And who can say when the day sleeps, if the night keeps all your heart?
Night keeps all your heart...

Goodbye?
I seriously think saying too many goodbyes can dull a soul. Well, at least I can feel its groggy effect on mine. I know I want to, need to, have to move on but somehow there's still something lingering, something still pulling me apart.
The first goodbye is for my used-to-be sweetie. It's too complicated, can't even talk about it now.
The second goodbye is for my friend, J, who is going to another state for his mission. When most of my good friends/best friends/loved ones are always somewhere but near me, saying goodbye has become a part of my life.
The third goodbye is for my nurse. I called her "my nurse" because when I did my clinical at the local hospital, she was the one who guide me through things and basically she was my guardian to make sure I do the right, proper things in the chaotic ER. The process of saying goodbye to her was simple, it just consisted of a few appreciative words, a few cookies, a candle, and a squeeze-until-you-feel-it hug. That didn't last longer than 3 minutes. The things that were felt during that 3 minutes, however, will be remembered for a long time. Great memories sometimes just last a few seconds.
Ironically, I wrote a lot on this blog about my feelings, but I'm a chicken when it comes time to say it out. Words get scrambled when my heart beats fast; it happens like that every time.
After that, I gave up my name badge, the little magnetic plate with a chip embedded in it that gave me access to those forbidden corridors of the hospital. The act of "giving it up" was just simple as laying it down on the table for someone to collect it, but I feel like I gave up much more than that. Somehow I miss it when I had to get up at 5:45 in the morning, got into those stain-prone white uniforms and dragged myself half asleep to the hospital. The first day I was there, I was ultimately confused. Didn't know much about what to do and what not to do. Totally lost. Then, of course, things got better; I learned more, and accomplished more. But still, can't forget that first day.
And can't forget the last day, either.
I guess that hospital's just an amazing place filled up with amazing people. And really, there are not a lot of places that can bring back to me such powerful memory. I know I will go to more and more places and will get used to new things. I know I will meet more people and will get close to them. I know, I know all that, but still, there is still something missing.
In two week, I'll graduate. What does it mean?
For now, it means more goodbyes to come.
The Endless Space Between...
You ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I'm only just beginning to see the real you
Romance and all its strategy
Leaves me battling with my pride
But through the insecurity
Some tenderness survives
I'm just another writer
Still trapped within my truth
A hesitant prize fighter
Still trapped within my youth
At times I'd like to break you
And drive you to your knees
At times I'd like to break through
And hold you endlessly
At times I understand you
And I know how hard you've tried
I've watched while love commands you
And I've watched love pass you by
At times I think we're drifters
Still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister
But then the passion flares again
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Con Gái Bảo Bình
Điều trước hết cần ghi nhớ khi bạn định quan tâm thân thiết với con gái Bảo Bình: nàng rất khác thường trong tình yêu, cũng như trong cuộc sống
Nàng sẽ chung tình với bạn, nhưng đồng thời hơi lãnh đạm. Những phụ nữ được sao Thiên Vương phù trợ, ngoài người yêu ra, còn có vô số bạn bè và sở thích --> Nàng thuộc về tất cả, đồng thời không thuộc về ai.
Một khi quyết định bắt cánh bướm đáng yêu này, bạn cần suy nghĩ xem mình có khả năng chung sống với lòng yêu tự do của nó hay không. --> Nếu bạn cần một phụ nữ nồng nhiệt, sẵn sàng dành hết mình cho bạn, thì lựa chọn này hoàn toàn không đạt.
Bảo Bình là người bạn nữ lý tưởng cho những ai theo đuổi sự nghiệp khoa học hoặc chính trị. Nàng dí dỏm, dễ mến trong tiếp xúc, ứng xử tự nhiên trong bất kỳ môi trường nào, từ thượng lưu nhất cho đến thường dân nhất.
Thông thường, Bảo Bình không mắc bệnh đa nghi. Nàng vui vẻ tin tưởng tất cả những lời bạn nói. Thứ nhất, nàng đã nghiên cứu bạn kỹ lưỡng trước khi cưới, và giả thử bạn không đáp ứng được các yêu cầu thì nàng không đời nào chịu làm vợ bạn. Thứ hai, ngoài bạn ra, trong đời nàng còn nhiều thứ thú vị khác. Có thể nói, những người sinh cung Bảo Bình, nam cũng như nữ, ít khi bận tâm đến bạn đời của mình nếu người đó không hiện diện trước mắt họ.
Tuy nhiên, nếu bạn để đến tình trạng nàng có đủ căn cứ để mất lòng tin, Bảo Bình sẽ bỏ bạn mà đi. Hai người vẫn sẽ là bạn bè, nhưng không hơn. Chỉ có một trường hợp ngoại lệ trong chuyện này - đó là mối tình đầu. Nó khiến nàng nhung nhớ suốt đời.
Bảo Bình không thích cho vay tiền cũng như đi vay mượn. Đó là con người của lời hứa. Bản thân nàng nếu buộc phải vay mượn thì sẽ trả đúng hạn và chu đáo. Nhưng Bảo Bình hầu như không vay tiền ai. Họ sợ mắc nợ như sợ lửa.
Phần lớn phụ nữ Bảo Bình có một vẻ đẹp huyền bí. Đây là một trong những cung có nhiều phụ nữ đẹp nhất. Thậm chí những Bảo Bình không thể gọi là đẹp thì cũng là những phụ nữa mà người ta thấy thú vị, hấp dẫn khi giao tiếp
Chuyện trò với Bảo Bình cũng hấp dẫn không kém gì hình thức của nàng. Đang đàm đạo với bạn về công việc nghiêm túc, nàng đột nhiên nói rằng bạn không những trùng tên với ông ngoại nàng mà còn trong tên đệm của bạn có hai chữ cái giống nhau. Sự chuyển đề tài bất ngờ như vậy có thể làm bạn bế tắc, nhưng đối với nàng, đó là điều hoàn toàn tự nhiên.
Đừng mong người vợ Bảo Bình sẽ thực thi chuẩn xác tất cả những yêu cầu và đề nghị của bạn. Bảo Bình có thế giới quan của riêng mình. Đừng cố thay đổi, uốn nắn nó. Nàng hoàn toàn có thể mặc áo len mặt sau ra đằng trước, cắm hoa vào bát to, và gội đầu bằng kem cạo râu… Vì sao nàng làm thế? Chính nàng nhiều khi không biết tại sao. Thích thì làm thôi.
Không biết mọi người có để ý không, Bảo Bình là tui đó
A Letter to Shelfari.com
When I was writing this letter, I think I was just wasting my time. However, I went ahead and finished with it, just out of principles. I'll put it in the mailbox first thing in the morning. It is related to the whole email fiasco that I went through with the website www.shelfari.com. As much as trouble as I have with it, I thought I should have made it a little harsher. But anyway, read on if you're interested.
To Whom It May Concern,
Subject: Problems with invitation emails
On the week of October 1, 2007, I registered to be a member of your website under the username “smile17”. At first, I enjoyed using the website, with it user-friendly interface and its outstanding design. I felt energetic, convincing myself that finally there is a website that is using the latest technology to connect book lovers together.
Consequently, with such excitement, later on that week, I provided Shelfari with my Yahoo! ID and password to grant Shelfari a one-time access to my Yahoo! Address book to retrieve my contacts’ information to see who have been on Shelfari and who have not. I also personally chose to send invitations to just a few more friends whom I would like to share my book preferences with.
A few days later, on October 7, 2007, I received an email from a contact telling me that they did not interest in Shelfari and kindly asked me not to invite her to Shelfari again. The problem here is that I did not choose to invite her to Shelfari in the first place. With further investigation, I found out that not only her, but everyone that is in my Yahoo! Address book, including my professional and business contacts, whom I did not desire to share my book preferences with whatsoever, has received invitations from me to join Shelfari.
Therefore, losing trust with Shelfari, I deleted my account on October 9th. And surprisingly, a day later, another one of my contact emailed me and asked me to “get me off the list” because she received a second invitation from Safari under my name. And in fact, I did not want to invite her in the first place, let alone let it happen twice. Since I deleted my account and was no longer a Shelfari’s account holder, Shelfari has no rights whatsoever to use my email address to send invitations to people in my address book without my consent. This incident truly infuriates me, as I spent endless hours to write emails apologizing for a mistake that I did not make.
As a consumer, I have the rights to maintain the privacy of my identity, and in this situation, my identity has been breached blatantly. Hereby, in writing, I ask you to respect my rights and stop using my name and my email address in any form to invite any person to join Shelfari and/or Shelfari associates.
Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Signed
Update: Shelfari sent me an email to apologize and promise that there would not be anymore email sent out under my name and email address. Thanks to everybody for commenting!
5. Stop taking it all so damn seriously
8. Start something
Sounds interesting, huh? Watch the whole Flash clip about those principles here: http://www.eightprinciples.com/
Hmm...
I was doing a test called "What shapes your personality?" on Tickle. The full result has a section that goes like this, "You might also find that you tend to focus so completely on your goal that you don't notice when it would be in your best interest to alter your plans. If you are troubled by these tendencies, try looking up from your tasks from time to time to make sure the course of action that you are taking is the best one for you."
So focus too much on a goal is a problem, too?
What if...?
"Here I stand alone
With this weight upon my heart
And it will not go away"
Lâu lắm mới nghe lại What if của Kate Winslet. Hay thật, có những lúc đang cần một lời khuyên, một động lực để thúc đẩy lòng tin thì lại ngẫu nhiên nghe những bài hát đã từng một lần làm mình điên đảo, từng một lần làm mình cân nhắc lại quyết định của mình. Từ nhỏ đến lớn, SH lúc nào cũng là người đi theo tình cảm của mình, dĩ nhiên là không đi theo một cách mù quáng, nhưng đa phần là thiên về tình cảm hơn là lý trí. Và dĩ nhiên, cũng vì vậy mà SH buồn cũng nhiều, vui cũng không ít, mà lận đận dở dang cũng không kém gì. Đa số là tự mình chuốc họa vào thân, tòan là chọn làm nhân vật chính những câu chuyện không có mở đầu cũng không có kết thúc, hoặc có mở đầu nhưng kết thúc thì mãi ở tận nơi xa xăm nào đó. Nhưng có một điều, một điều không thể nào không nói đến, là SH chưa bao giờ, chưa một lần nào hối hận về những việc mà SH làm theo cái kiểu tình cảm của SH. Chắc cũng vì vậy mà SH ít đi theo lý trí của mình nếu có tình cảm chen vào?
Có người hỏi SH sao SH tin nhiều quá vậy, dù thực tế có vẻ khá ảm đạm, hay nói thẳng ra là mịt mù. Tin chứ, không tin làm sao sống được. Không tin thì trái tim nó chết từ lâu rồi. Mà có lẽ trong cái tin đó cũng có cái sợ nữa, sợ khi già rồi, ngồi trên một cái ghế cũng già nua cũ kĩ không kém mà lại tự hỏi mình "what if" và rồi cũng tự kết luận "...but I guess we'll never know".
Tin, tin với SH.
Scribbles about Things
The other day, on my way to a clinical site in Denton, I was supposed to stop by the bank to deposit some checks for my host mom. And, as absent-minded as I am, I drove pass the bank without even thinking about stopping. When I realized that, it was already too late, so I kept going on, thinking I would be about 15 minutes to spare. But I didn't have that much time. There was an accident on the interstate, and everybody was hold off for quite a while. I made it to where I am supposed to be just in time. If I did remember going to the bank, I would have been late, wouldn't I?
On the exact same day, when I was on my way back, I turned on the wrong intersection, and instead of going North to go home, I was going further South. I was going to turn around, but then I thought, what the heck, while I'm at it, I'm going to eat Vietnamese food. So I drove another 15 minutes and landed in a Vietnamese restaurant that I've known for some time. I gave myself a treat and was glad about it. If I did turn on the right way, I would have missed out on it, wouldn't I?
So I concluded, after my lucky day, that a mistake may not be a mistake; a mistake can be a new opening into something great, something that is more beneficial and prosperous than I can imagine. Maybe you think I'm lame to give you those two little stories and then go to such a grave conclusion. I have some more stories, actually I have a whole list of things in my head that I did wrong. I didn't do them right the first time; but later they turned out to be the right mistakes. Sometimes things have to go wrong before they can become right.
...
I'm trying to drive slower. In my dictionary, the definition of "driving fast" is driving above 75 miles/hr (approx. 120 km/hr). So the goal here is to drive below that. I admitted I overlooked it quite a lot of times, but I will try harder. Driving slower relaxes me, and it gives me peace.
...
I helped save a life yesterday.
...
Somebody told me maybe we all need some personal time to refresh, rethink everything to make it better. But how to rethink when everything seems to be so confusing and there is no way to get out of it?
...
I found myself pondering upon the question, "What am I in a world so far away from home?" "Home" is where it's sweet, where I can see all of my loved ones, wherever they are.
...
I made a new website for my college group: sna.hereweb.com
...
I received a package today in the mail. Neatly packed, with lots of nice things in it, and a DVD loaded with stuff. Thanks, to the sender(s), with love
...
The song that I'm currently listening to: Groove Coverage - Far Away from Home
I thought it was a cute song.
...
Venting
I hoped. Then I got disappointed. Then I hoped again, even more than before. And now I'm disappointed all over again. It's like going up the down staircase.
I'm starting back to school. Spent 2 whole days there, then came home with a headache and went to bed with another one. And the semester just started; I have 15 weeks and 1 day left till the day I graduate.
I need to be stronger than before. And keep trying. And keep hoping. And keep my hands on the wheel. And all that stuff.
August 06, 2007
I woke up this morning, pulled the blanket to one side and looked at the ceiling. It felt like every normal day; everything's the same and nothing special's going to happen. I guess nobody remembers what happened on this day 4 years ago. What's the heck, it's not that important, why do I have to remember it?
Just to track my progress, or just to draw another mental picture of my past, I guess. Last year has been chaotic; everything started to messed up and people started to change. I changed, too. My nerve got better; I think I can handle more things than I could this time last year. I'm calmer than I've ever been, although there are a couple of times when I inevitably lost my temper and caused disastrous things. School's going good; I will have my first college degree not before long. I also have some different kinds of friends, some are better, and some are worse than those friends that I always have. And there is somebody out there who cares about me and loves me, too.
Wonder what I'm gonna be like this time next year, on August 6th...
Có một chữ T, một chữ a, một chữ g :)
Thể lệ thì mọi người biết rồi ha, đọc thuộc lòng luôn rồi ha, Quyên khỏi nhắc lại nữa
1. Hồi nhỏ SH y như con trai, không bao giờ chịu mặc đồ con gái, chỉ toàn quần sọc, áo thun. Hồi đó SH cũng hơi bị quậy nữa, thành tích là 2 cái sẹo để đời, một cái ngay dưới cằm, SH sưu tầm được sau khi nhảy từ trên một cái bàn học xuống cái sàn nhà bằng xi măng, phải đi vá 2, 3 mũi gì đó. Còn cái kia thì ở đầu gối, lúc đó SH đang chơi tạt lon (có ai nhớ cái trò đó ko ta), cái miệng lon bén nhẵn bay vèo vào chân, máu chảy không dứt, phải bông băng, rồi rốt cuộc phải đi chích ngừa phong đòn gánh nữa
2. SH là người rất nhạy cảm, nhạy cảm với con người, với môi trường xung quanh. Nhạy cảm đến mức thỉnh thỏang Quyên thấy ngạc nhiên vì sao mình ngẫm ra được nhiều chuyện từ những chi tiết vụn vặt tưởng như rất mơ hồ từ người khác. Và những chuyện đó sau này lại trờ thành sự thật. Rồi cũng có lúc từ cái nhạy cảm đó mà SH lại suy diễn ra nhiều chuyện khác, có lúc SH đúng, có lúc SH sai, rồi có lúc những chuyện đó làm SH bực mình vô cớ nữa...
3. SH hay để ý cách xưng hô với người khác, tùy vào vị trí địa lý, tình thân, hoặc tuồi tác. Bạn ở BH của SH xưng hô khác với bạn ở SG cho nên SH cũng xưng hô khác. Người nào mới quen hoặc quen sơ sơ thì SH kêu là bạn, bạn này, hoặc xưng tên. Thân thì mày, tao. Rồi tớ, cậu nữa. Người nào Quyên kêu bằng anh thì người đó phải là "ấy" của SH hoặc phải là người lớn hơn SH một vài tháng gì đó. Blog cũng rắc rối nữa...
4. SH là người cầu tòan, đặc biệt trong các dự án cho nhóm. SH thấy cái gì luộm thuộm, tùy tiện là SH tìm cách sữa chữa hoặc đưa ra ý kiến với mục đích tốt, nhưng ý kiến lại bị hỉêu lầm thành chỉ trích nên nhiều khi không được hưởng ứng. Nếu không có gì cải thiện thì SH tìm cách thỏa hiệp, còn nếu SH thỏa hiệp không được hoặc SH cảm thấy lời nói và công việc của mình không được tôn trọng thì SH không hề ngần ngại dứt áo ra đi.
5. SH lái xe nhanh hay chậm đều là tùy hứng. Lúc nào SH có thời gian và không có xe đằng sau thì SH nhởn nhơ cho xe chạy tà tà để ngắm trời, ngắm mây, ngắm cây cỏ. Có xe đằng sau xuất hiện thì SH lại lật đật nhấn gas tăng tốc để không cản trở người khác. Rồi có lúc SH có nhiều chuyện phải làm hoặc chuẩn bị trễ học thì SH lái xe như bay, vượt Corvette luôn May là chưa có cái thẻ phạt quá tốc độ nào
6. SH nghĩ mọi chuyện xảy ra đều có cái lý do riêng của nó. Có nhiều lúc SH không biết cái lý do thật sự đó là gì nhưng SH tin một ngày nào đó SH sẽ biết. Điều quan trọng là những gì mà SH rút ra được từ những chuyện đã xảy ra mà thôi.
7. Nhiều người nói SH cười dễ thương, còn SH thấy ai cũng cười dễ thương hết nếu nụ cười xuất phát từ tấm lòng thành, không giả tạo hoặc mỉa mai người khác.
...Hầu như ai trong list của SH cũng tag hết rồi, chỉ có SH lẹt đẹt đi sau thôi. Nếu SH kể tên ra thì thiếu người này, có người kia, nên mọi người có ai chưa tag thì tag hết đi nha, ok?
I PLEDGE:
"1.To demand that my country join an international treaty within the next 2 years that cuts global warming pollution by 90% in developed countries and by more than half worldwide in time for the next generation to inherit a healthy earth;
2.To take personal action to help solve the climate crisis by reducing my own CO2 pollution as much as I can and offsetting the rest to become "carbon neutral;"
3.To fight for a moratorium on the construction of any new generating facility that burns coal without the capacity to safely trap and store the CO2;
4.To work for a dramatic increase in the energy efficiency of my home, workplace, school, place of worship, and means of transportation;
5.To fight for laws and policies that expand the use of renewable energy sources and reduce dependence on oil and coal;
Dad
I finally got to see my dad after almost 4 years since I last saw him. I was a little bit nervous; I bit my nails, I picked on my fingers. It seemed so strange. Why was I nervous to see my dad? I also felt a sense of awe taking over me, as excitement was thrusting through my veins. I got to see my dad. That sentence alone has all the significance in the world.
However, when I saw him face to face, all those mixed emotions dissolved themselves and was superseded by pure bliss. There, in the seas of strangers, stood my dad. Him, that's my dad. To my surprise, he looked a little bit older than I imagined him to be. I guess my family never get old in my mind. Or maybe I didn't face the reality until now.
I spent almost 2 days with him. Short, but sweet. I talked. I laughed. I felt safe, very safe, like nothing in this world could sway me. I've been living on edge for too long, I miss having the feeling of being carefree and protected. My dad brought all those things back to me simply with his presence; he did not even have to use any word or carry out any action.
And that two days passed by before I knew it. After saying goodbye to him, I drove away and inevitably, my eyes got red. I could still hear my dad's voice on the back of my mind, "You have to take care of yourself because you're just by yourself here." Bitter. So bitter.
Nevertheless, I came home here in Texas again with trailer homes, with horses, with wild grass, with the everlasting blue sky. I just can't help but wonder, in the end, what does really matter?
Water and cell phones don't mix
It was pouring down late Sunday night and early Monday morning. Water was everywhere. Actually, all that rain precipitated a flood in Gainesville and other cities. Bad things just happen without any warning.
And yes, just like that, bad things happen without any warning, I dropped my cell phone in the standing water in front of my house. When I picked it up, it was still working. However, after about 5 minutes, it started fading away slowly...The screen went black first, then the keypads began flashing like crazy, then the outside screen turned white...I punched the power button a few times, and it did vibrate, like it really really tried to turn itself on, but to no avail. The phone finally grasped its last "vibrating" breath and passed away 10 minutes later.
No big deal. It's just a cell phone. I can wake up later in the morning, although I somehow got used to those really-early-morning calls from someone.
No big deal. It's just a cell phone. A cell phone with a long list of contacts that sometime I just skip through because of the time constraint or because of those moments that "I'm not in the right mood to talk."
No big deal. It's just a cell phone. It has those text messages from friends that wish me a Happy Birthday, a Merry Christmas, or sometime just simply Have a Nice Day. And of course, those messages that say "I Love You."
No big deal. It's just a cell phone. Things like that can always be replaceable. I just need to wait a few days for a different phone to arrive through the mail.
Between now and then, I just have to miss someone's voice...
Without permission...
I took this photo in Walmart yesterday; it's pretty blurry because basically I was trying to run with the shopping cart and shoot it at the same time. I just have a little built-in camera in my cell phone, and I earnestly want to capture the moment. Blurry or not, the photo meant something for me.
The most prominent part of the photo is the elderly couple who were holding hands and shopping in Walmart. They both looked to be in their 70s, judging upon their white hair and appearances. They walked quite briskly along the aisles of Walmart, and with all the pride in the world, he locked his fingers with her. Passionately and firmly. They seemed to pay little attention to the world around them, for I guess they've already had their own little world right there, right then, where all that mattered was a warm holding of hands that connect them together. Such a wonderful thing to see.
Of course, a lot of heads were turned; most of the people expressed an immediate admiration of the couple. Some of the others just looked away. And I, I just tried to stay a little behind them so I didn't disturb their sacred space. I watched them, and I thought.
Anyhow, the content of my blurry and poor-quality photo is something so big that I can't even start to describe it. It's love, true love, the kind that can withstand time...
Or is there anything really that can withstand time?
Reminiscence
Well, where should I start?
*I just finished with my only final yesterday, so basically I'm completely free now. That's good; at least I have time to calm down and relax before continuing with the next class, which starts next week. I really don't want to think about it yet; I'm just so pleased about my break right now.
*Three of my instructors, or used-to-be my instructors, won't come back next semester. I will miss them; they changed my ways of thinking on a lot of subjects. They helped me to become a better me. Can't deny that.
*I received a constructive criticism that I should be a little more assertive. Hm, I guess I should. It never hurts to try to be better. Everything I do revolves around my idealism anyway; I'm a dedicated idealist.
*I'm here, without someone. Everything is like a puzzle with missing pieces.
*I just found out that the guy who went with me to my junior prom in high school has changed his sexual orientation. He's gay now. A little bit shocking for me. I never thought for once in my life that I would be in a situation like that. One can never predict what's gonna happen.
Anyway, que sera, sera.
Twist of Fate
Catching your last glimpse before you disappeared into those double doors at the airport just made me sick. There was nothing much that I could say, or do, that seemed to be enough. Words became too vague to be meaningful; emotions became too turbulent to be expressed. I fumbled my way back to the driver's seat, slowly realizing that this was not a dream; this was the reality that I've always dreaded of. So much agony.
The rest of the day passed by sluggishly. Love songs evoke pain. Places stir up memories. You seem to be everywhere I go, yet I can't see you. You seem to be so close, yet so far. Are we playing the game of destiny? Am I losing it?
I'm watching you...from the distance. And I'm smiling.
Mong manh
Mong manh quá...một tuần, một tháng, một đời người...
Mong manh quá...một khuôn mặt, một nụ cười, một ánh mắt...
Mong manh quá...một bài hát, một câu nói, một cử chỉ...
Sao mà mọi thứ trở nên mong manh quá...Chưa có bắt đầu đã sợ có kết thúc...Chưa có nước đã sợ ngập lụt...Chưa có thang đã sợ té đau...
Chắc tại thời gian trôi qua nhanh, gặp người này, gặp người kia, rồi cuối cùng nhìn quanh quẩn, không thấy gì hết nữa, chỉ thấy con người ta...mong manh quá.
Mong manh.
"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood..."
Went to Walmart the other day, just wandering around all those aisles. Looked like I was looking for something, but in fact, I didn't. Just wanted to walk, just wanted to be aimless, purposeless, careless for a moment in time.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not sad, I'm not depressed, I'm not gloomy or anything like that. I just can't make up my mind about what I really want. Vanilla or chocolate? Pink or blue? Coke or Pepsi? This school or that school? A long road or a shortcut? Now or the future? Bravery or cowardice? Following other people or drawing my own path?
What can I say, those questions keep popping up in my head. I've always tried to be careful and mapped out plans for things. But plans don't work out right away as they're crafted; it takes a lot of research, revision, and evaluation to update the plans. And they still don't work. Then plan B, plan C, plan D come along. Now another question arises: Which one is the best?
"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could..."
It is just me that I always have to be in the know zone of what I'm doing. If I buy a new machine, I will read the manual from front to back to make sure I get it right the first time. If I order a service, I will sit down and read the service agreement word for word to make sure I know what my rights are. Yep, I "make sure" everything is in perfect order before I do anything.
But life is not in perfect order. Life is unpredictable, chaotic, and full of surprises. So sometimes I have to close my eyes, take a guess, and step forward. Dare I? Dare I make the bet when my future is on the table?
The Road Less Traveled - Robert Frost
Hôm nay là xuân phân, vậy là mùa xuân ở đây đã bắt đầu rồi. Nhìn quanh nhìn quẩn thấy mọi thứ đều trở nên xanh tươi hơn, mát mẻ hơn. Con đường đất dẫn đến nhà mấy tháng trước bị bao trùm bằng một màu xám xịt của mùa đông, bây giờ thì cây cỏ hai bên đường lại xanh um, màu mỡ, nhìn thật đã con mắt.
Không biết có phải vì cái bệnh hòai cổ hay không, mà thỉnh thỏang gần đây lại cảm nhận được cái khí trời mát dịu của BH sau cơn mưa. Lành lạnh. Nhẹ nhàng. Hơi kỳ lạ.
Mà nhanh ha, đông qua rồi, xuân lại tới. Thời gian cứ như cơn bão vậy, tạt ầm ầm vào cửa mà mình có hề hay biết. Sắp xong học kỳ này rồi, còn tháng mấy nữa thôi, sắp phải chạy đua với thời gian nữa rồi.
Mùa đông thì cây cỏ khô héo, yểu lả. Mùa xuân thì hoa lá lại đâm chồi nảy lộc. Rồi hè đến, rực rỡ, mạnh mẽ trong ánh nắng. Đến mùa thu thì lá lại úa vàng. Rồi lại quay trở lại mùa đông. Thiên nhiên biết cách tự làm mới mình vậy đó.
Phải chi con người ta cũng làm được vậy ha, vui một chút, buồn một chút, thất vọng một chút, phấn khởi một chút, bạo gan một chút, nhút nhát một chút...Đừng có cái gì nhiều chút hết, cái gì nhiều quá thì mang lại triệu chứng phụ.
Vui
Cái radio cũ hư rồi, cũng lâu rồi đi xe mà không có nhạc gì hết, buồn tơn. Thỉnh thỏang vẫn kiếm lý do để lấy xe ba me nuôi đi học, có nhạc, không khí sinh động hẳn lên Chắc thấy tội quá nên sinh nhật được tặng cho nguyên một cái máy đĩa mới. Vui. Nhưng rắc rối nhất là cái vụ gắn cái máy đó vô xe... Gần 3 tiếng đồng hồ lụi cụi với một mớ dây nhợi, dao kéo, ốc vít, kiềm, tuốcnơvít và các thứ linh tinh khác, cuối cùng sứ mệnh cũng hòan tất Tại cái tật keo nên không muốn đem xe ra tiệm, vả lại cũng muốn nhúng tay làm thử coi thế nào. Kết quả mỹ mãn, chỉ có 2 ngón tay bị xước tại vừa làm vừa nhiều chuyện với con Ruồi Hôm nay, vặn volume lớn thật lớn, chạy xe vòng vòng, ngớ ngẩn, nhưng vui
Tết mẹ gọi điện thọai qua. Nghe cái âm hưởng của tết vang vọng ở đâu đó...Xong rồi gọi điện cho bà ở quê. Bà mừng thật mừng. Vậy là được vui thêm lần nữa
Tết mà, phải có chuyện gì vui vẻ mới gọi là tết chứ. Dù tết ở xa hay tết ở gần...
The First Moment
From the moment I catch your eyes,
My life was seem so bright.
Loneliness gone, and sadness far away.
Hands in hands, we feel so right
Love has seen the light
It’s new but you can feel, love could be so real
Like a breeze by the sea
Love is life with you and me
Forever you will see, together we will be!
Close your eyes, we're flying high
Like the birds soar in the sky
Forever I will try...to be by your side!
Valentine năm nay cũng khác với mọi năm. Mọi năm thì chỉ ở nhà coi TV, bình thường không có gì hết. Năm nay bệnh từ sáng đến chiều, người nong nóng, lừ đừ, nhìn ai cũng bằng cặp mắt hình viên đạn Ngòai mặt thì vậy đó nhưng trong lòng thì ấm áp lắm...Valentine mà, đi đâu cũng thấy mọi người vui vẻ, cười nói, nhìn nhau bằng ánh mắt trìu mến...Phải chi 365 ngày đều là Valentine hết ha...
Hôm nay sinh nhật. 20 tuổi. Trẻ mãi không già
Bây giờ ngồi nghêu ngao hát "Ôi có bao nhiêu, hai mươi năm cuộc đời..." Nhanh thật, lúc 10 tuổi ngẫm nghĩ, "Không biết lúc mình 20 tuổi sẽ ra sao ha". Bây giờ thì biết rồi, không cần chờ đợi, mong ngóng làm chi. Tự tuổi 20 nó đến nó tìm mình thôi. Mình thì không muốn thấy mặt nó, trốn nó như trốn nợ vậy mà có được đâu. Thôi đành mời nó vô nhà, kiếm bánh kem đãi cho nó ăn, xong rồi kêu nó đi thu nạp quà cáp vậy
"...Mày ơi, mày à, sinh nhật này mày chính thức là người lớn rồi. Tuổi già lấp ló rồi đó cưng à! Nín mất! Nín mất! Chỉ cần mày hứa là trong năm mới này mày không leo lên đầu lên cổ tao nữa thì tao sẽ luôn đem niềm vui đến cho mày để mày age một cách êm đềm há! Năm mới chúc mày Phước như Đông Hải, Thọ Tỉ Nam Sơn, tiền vô như nước, muốn gì được nấy... Sinh nhật thật là Tuyệt (hình một con cú + hình một con gì đó, nhưng theo đương sự giải thích thì đó là con mèo, suy ra là Tuyệt Cú Mèo).
"Hey, bonne fête. Happy Birthday. Chúc mừng sinh nhật.
I wish you the best year ever. BTW, you are no longer "teenager"; you turn 20 so you are old 'madame'..."
Inside the card it read: "May it be yours on your birthday and always."
"Hope you had a great day so far. I was waiting for you all day just to say Happy Birthday.
From your friend, ..."
Chúc sinh nhật tập 1: "Heo ui! chuc may sinh nhat dzui dze nha! hanh phuc, may man va ngay cang co gang xinh dep bang tao "
Chúc sinh nhật tập 2:
"Lay chong la vua rui! hehe!,
Heo ui!
Sinh nhat dzui dze nha may!
Chuc may som yen be gia that, duoc chong con yeu thuong.
Ps: Giong may wa xa! ..."
"Daughter, may your birthday be just the beautiful beginning of a wonderful year-Enjoy your special day.
Happy Birthday.
Love,
From Mom, Dad, and Little Bit"
(Little Bit là tên con chó trong nhà )
Đó là thiệp mình nhận được tuần rồi. Còn nhiều lời chúc nữa, trong comment box, offline messages...rồi ai đó dẫn mình đi ăn nữa chứ...cám ơn mọi người nhiều nhiều! Thank you all very much!
Just discovered this; I didn't remember a thing about putting it there. But anyway, this is a little gift from me to those 02ANers who are *nostalgic.
Our Album
Back to School
First day of school. I got me covered up with beanie, gloves, sweater, jacket, coat. We've just been through an ice storm, so going outside is like stepping into a freezer. I got numb.
I was excited at first, but then I looked around in my class and felt something missing. Some of my friends weren't there; they got kicked off the program because they failed the class last semester. The program started with 48 students; now we have about 30 left after 2 semesters. Bitter. It is so easy to get used to somebody and then, boom, they're not there anymore. I feel sorry for them, too. All that time and efforts were wasted for nothing.
First day is always the day of orientation. About 5 or 10 minutes into that, my professor announced: "Don't expect to make an A in this course or it's going to be a long, hard, miserable semester. I'm happy if you can just make a 75 and pass it." It's long, hard, and miserable anyway, regardless of the grade. Maybe she was just being honest, but the way she said that seems to be so brutal, so discouraging. I try not to let that affect me. I try not to let any negative external forces affect me, for the sake of my own inner peace.
I'm still excited about going back to school, though. Anything fresh is good.
Vietnamese online gamers have to limit their playtime to 5 hrs/day if they want to play Vietnamese games. Or they can just switch to foreign servers with foreign games and play for as long as they want.
Why? Too much game-playing will impair the youngsters' minds??
The Power of "If"
IF
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master,
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
Rudyard Kipling
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Heard about this poem a lot of times lately, but didn't read it until now. Just want to share it with you all. I was turned off a little when I got to the last sentence, but it's ok, I will read it as, "And - which is more - you'll be a Lady, my daughter!"
"The Pursuit of Happiness"
On the spur of the moment, a friend asked me to go to Ft Worth with him to eat Vietnamese food. So I said yes, thinking he may just say it to appease my hungry heart. But, out of the blue, yesterday afternoon, he told me we were going to Ft Worth right then I just had enough time to print a quick direction to the place, and voila, there we went.
He's about my granddad's age, and he's been so good to me, so basically I looked to him as a father figure (He said he would give me away at my wedding, but more to that later, he talked as if I were getting marred next week ). Well, he thought he knew Ft Worth like the back of his hand, so he didn't really look at the direction I had. As a result of that, he drove in circle for two hours. Finally, I suggested we stopping at a nail shop to ask for direction, as I thought I may find some Vietnamese there. I was right. With a new direction from a good-hearted lady in the nail shop, we managed to get there, but that place is closed on Sunday. That was my luck . So we stopped to another nail shop to ask, and we got directed to Haltom city. We stopped at the third nail shop for direction again in Haltom, and finally we made it there, a little restaurant called Phở 95 in a huge Vietnamese shopping center. Three hours of driving around, without maps, and we made it. Yay!
When we entered the restaurant, everybody just turned their heads and looked at us. I looked tiny standing next to him, a 6 ft tall guy who was all dressed up with his oversized leather jacket, a traditional cowboy hat, and a well-polished pair of black boots. He actually looked like my bodyguard.
We had a good time there. Unsurprisingly, I enjoyed my steamy bowel of "phở" tremendously. My friend enjoyed his plate of "cơm tấm thịt nướng" also; he said he would take his wife there to eat later.
Later in the day, I watched the ball dropped in New York's Times Square; it was a spectacular show. At midnight, I meant to find my dog and give her a big New Year hug (everybody else was sleeping), but I was preoccupied with something else and totally forgot about it until this morning. Is it a bad sign to forget to do something on the first day of the year?
Anyway, that's what I did on the last day of 2006. I'm thrilled with everything so far; my "pursuit of happiness" journey for this year has just started.
